The Institute personnel are highly-qualified nuclear energy experts. There are two Ph.D experts inthe Institute. The major number of the Institute employees accumulated a substantial work experience directly at NPPs, academic scientific institutions, scientific technical support organizations, the national regulatory authority and other specialized organizations of nuclear and energy profile, the experience in review and licensing activities and the experience in the international cooperation in the area of nuclear energy in big projects.

The Institute personnel are certified for knowledge of rules, norms and standards on nuclear and radiation safety and NPP operation by the State Commission No 1 under the Ministry for Fuel and Energy of Ukraine and NPP OSI Commission. In accordance with the established procedure the personnel take a test for legislative and regulatory and legal regulations on industrial safety, health protection, first aid, electrical and fire safety at State Enterprise The Main Training Center for Mining Supervision and Industrial Safety.

The Institute personnel permanently upgrade their skills through regional and international courses and seminars on nuclear energy and applied tasks as reflected by corresponding Ukrainian and international certificates in particular on the following priorities:

  • Accident prevention and management during NPP operation;
  • NPP instrumentation and control systems;
  • Safety parameter display system for Ukrainian NPP VVER-1000 power units;
  • Safety concept and assessment of advanced NPP reactors;
  • Methodology for operational safety assessment;
  • Dry spent nuclear fuel storage;
  • Project management in nuclear energy;
  • Organizational change management techniques;
  • Conducting of seismic tours for monitoring and recording the adequacy of conceptual implemented measures for upgrading seismic resistance of structures, systems and components installed at NPPs with VVERs;
  • Strength and seismic resistance assessment.
  • Quality System principles and practice: methodology of systematic approach to training.



Besides, the Institute experts received certificates and licenses for specialized computer programs such as:

  • SCALE5, +, MicroSkyshine 2.10, MicroShield 8 - intended for performance of expert assessments and conducting scientific studies for radiation protection, neutron and physical studies, safety analysis and environmental impact statement;
  • APMStructure 3D is a calculation module for stress-strain behavior, stability, own and forced vibration of elements and structures
  • ANSYS Mechanical
  • In 2014NPP OSI has obtained a license to use the ANSYS Mechanical software package. The Institute staff has been trained and gained the experience to use the program. The ANSYS Mechanical is a module for evaluation of the stress-strain state, dynamic analysis, thermal conditions and the associated types of calculation.

    The ANSYS is a universal software system of finite-element analysis. It exists and being developed during the last 45 years. The software used primarily by experts in the field of automation engineering calculations.

    The ANSYS can solve quite a wide range of tasks:

    o Mechanics of fluids - from single flows to multi-phase flow combustion;
    o Mechanics of solid deformable body - from the linear statics to high-speed interaction;
    o Electromagnetism - from low frequency analysis to high frequency tasks of magnetic fields.

  • ARGOS software

  • In 2015 NPP OSI has obtained a license to use the software package ARGOS, and the introductory training course for the staff of the Institute was conducted. ARGOS is an information system that is designed to support decision making in case of technogenic accidents of different types (nuclear, radiation and chemical).
    The primary model of ARGOS for the forecast of contamination spread to small, medium and large distances is RIMPUFF. The important feature of ARGOS is the use of weather forecast in the real time mode for calculations of atmospheric transport of contaminants. The prognostic data are provided by the system of numerical weather prediction (NWP) in form of information about wind parameters at different altitudes above the ground and estimation of the boundary layer.
    On the basis of meteorological data, RIMPUFF, in case of nuclear or radiation accident, calculates the radiation exposure doses (inhalation dose, dose to the whole body, and so on), the concentration of radionuclides in the air and their deposition on the ground surface. For this purpose, the standard precipitation models based on the size of the particles are used.

    To process a scenario of radiation and chemical contamination in urban areas (with specification of distances between the separate buildings on the streets of settlement), the ARGOS package contains the appropriate URD transfer model. The important part of the URD model support in ARGOS is the three-dimensional 3D GIS module. The three-dimensional image allows to demonstrate the propagation of plume in the urban area between separate buildings.

    The obtained comprehensive information is visualized on maps with user-friendly and intelligible interface, that is a very important feature in case when it is necessary to analyze and provide the results of emergency forecast.
